The cylinder – the heart of your engine
The cylinder is crucial for performance and handling. Together with the piston and cylinder head, it forms the combustion chamber in which the fuel-air mixture is compressed and ignited.
In most cases, the cylinder is made of gray cast iron or aluminum and has a coated or honed running surface. The piston moves up and down in it, while cooling fins on the outside dissipate heat.
Important components:
- Intake port – guides the mixture into the crankcase
- Transfer port – guide it into the combustion chamber
- Exhaust port – guides exhaust gases into the exhaust
- Combustion chamber – this is where the explosion takes place
The cylinder head seals the combustion chamber and influences the compression ratio through its shape. Modifications to the channels, compression or displacement can increase performance – from true to the original to high-end tuning.
